Proceeds from the new store at the corner of Getz Road and Jefferson Boulevard will benefit the center's ministries, which operate a food bank and provide sack lunches and personal hygiene and medicine cabinet items for those in need.

 

The store joins the center's Family Thrift flagship store at 925 Coliseum Blvd. E. That store opened about five years ago.

 

Tony Ley, the center's executive director, said the new store has had “a soft opening” and has been seeing growth every day.

 

The new store will provide “another convenient way for the public to support our programs” at 1015 E. Maple Grove Ave., he said.

 

Mostly volunteer workers “have transformed 12,000 square feet into another destination for quality, gently used clothing and household goods,” he said.

 

Like the Coliseum Boulevard store, this store will have a spot for dropping off donations. Drop-off will be open 24 hours a day, Ley said.

 

“Our biggest message is that donations stay local to help local families,” he added, noting that 40 percent to 50 percent of the center's income comes through sales of donated items. The rest comes from private monetary donations and fundraising.

 

About 150 customers visit the existing store each day it's open, Ley said.

 

The new store building was at one time a Gold's Gym. The entrance is off Getz Road. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

 

Donations of furniture are accepted, and pick-up of large items is available if possible, Ley said. Those seeking to donate may call 260-699-2955, he said.
